Nevada FOCUS (Facility Operator Certification for Utility Systems) is a collaborative effort of NV Energy, Nevada Industry Excellence, and the Nevada System of Higher Education. Individuals undertaking this program will learn essential skills to improve the health, wealth and environmental friendliness of building utility systems. Nevada FOCUS is a statewide training and certification program designed for building engineers, facility operators, their crews and other interested parties.
Nevada FOCUS consists of a series of workshops tailored to the needs in Northern, Rural, and Southern Nevada. Nevada FOCUS is recognized state-wide through continuing education or professional development credit. Upon successful completion of each course, a NSHE institution will award 0.7 CEU’s (7 PDH) and issue a certificate of certification to those who satisfy all program requirements for their geographical region.
This comprehensive program includes information on electrical, HVAC, water, compressed air, energy management control systems, code requirements, safety requirements, LEED initiatives, building commissioning and more. Click here for more information on the workshops.
The FOCUS program will show you how to improve energy and water efficiency and indoor air quality and make your facility more environmentally friendly. You will learn the latest technology and methods to increase cash flow by reducing energy costs, and enhance employee productivity through work environment and comfort enhancements.
Participants will learn how to:
Since 2005 (Program Inception to Present), 159 individual participants, representing 59 different companies and state and local government agencies, completed 10,296 classroom hours. 103 participants achieved and received FOCUS Certification which is being used by employers as promotion and hiring criteria throughout Nevada.
50 energy-saving project proposals were created for participants and their workplaces, including 45 electrical, 4 natural gas and 1 alternative fuel, with aggregate cumulative savings of 72 billion BTUs and $1.6 million. Most, not all, of these projects meet or exceed financial criteria for implementation, namely an 18% or greater annualized return on investment and a payback period of 1.5 years or less.
“The knowledge I gained in both technical and communication skills have proven to be very useful in my daily work. I know I will be able to apply these skills in both my career as well as my daily life.
I also believe that they played a role in the 80.35% energy conservation compliance achieved in the East Region.”
